So, you’re expecting a baby? Let me guess: you don’t feel especially Heidi Klum-esque these days? People tell you you have “that glow,” but it kind of seems less like a compliment than commentary on your flushed, sweaty face as you struggle to lug your gigantic body up what seems to be a world constructed entirely of staircases during that third trimester of fun. Been there, done that, have 3 (beastly but lovable) kids to prove it. But what I don’t have is maternity photos capturing that time. And although I felt like an elephant on steroids during my pregnancies (especially my daughter’s - she made me eat all the peanut butter and chocolate and gain that 65 lbs!) I now wish more than anything that I had a few decent photos to commemorate that time in my life. I didn’t have an easy time getting pregnant; maybe because of that, I felt insanely overjoyed about pregnancy and couldn’t wait to meet the little person inside of me, a person I was never sure I could create in the first place.
Unfortunately, all I have documenting that joy are blurry iphone selfies in front of the bathroom mirror. So when friends of mine are pregnant, which is few and far between these days as I get older and approach the big 4.0., I harangue/kindly encourage them to take the time to get professional maternity photos, and explain that one day, years from now, those photos will remind them of how they felt while carrying their babies, how weird and wonderful (and sometimes painful) it felt to have another living being inside you.
So I’d like to highlight a mother who did choose to capture her pregnancy, even though it wasn’t her first, and may not be her last. She is stunning as all pregnant women are; glowing with the happiness that comes from knowing that inside her she contains something amazing that is yet to be known by the rest of the world. After consulting with her, we decided to go with a studio maternity session because it felt like the best fit for the sort of photos she wanted captured. I love that we were able to include her older daughter who was adorably excited to meet the newest member of the family and to be included in this special photo session with her mother.
