When I ask clients, “what sort of photos do you tend to prefer: posed or more candid?” I rarely get “posed” as the response. Everyone wants photos that look natural, and these days, “posed” in reference to photography has become a dirty word, synonymous with “uncomfortable,” “stiff” or “not real.” But I’ve stopped asking clients that question. Why? Clients don’t realize that the photos they see and adore on photographers’ websites, the ones that convey emotion, movement, and connection, the ones that seem totally unposed, are in fact very much posed. If a photographer were to wait for that perfect moment when a mother kisses her new baby in a way that is both flattering to mother and baby, perfectly lit, AND captures the depth of the mother’s love for her baby, that photographer might need to take up solitaire or knitting to entertain themselves during the long wait. The truth is, we have no idea how we look when we are being photographed; a good photographer knows that we cannot see ourselves as we appear to the camera and is directive in creating moments that are sweet, funny, meaningful, and most importantly, beautiful on film.
Given the current desire for more natural photos, many photographers are now offering “lifestyle” photo sessions in clients’ homes. A lifestyle newborn session might capture a family interacting with the new baby in the nursery or lounging together on a cozy bed. Although the moments captured are ones that appear to have occurred organically, they are carefully crafted by a photographer with an eye for detail and light. And clients love the outcome of these sessions — everyone looks comfortable (because they are!) and the photos are flattering (because the photographer made sure of it). However, many clients want the look of lifestyle newborn photography without the stress of having an actual session in their home. Making sure your house is perfectly clean, clutter-free, and lit with amazing natural light is a task that would overwhelm anyone, nevermind parents who've been operating on two hours of sleep, plus a waning supply of adrenaline since the arrival of their newborn. Not judging; my home looked like a laundry hurricane had hit us after I brought my babies home… a unique hurricane that also scattered dirty dishes and baby paraphernalia in its wake.
We’ve got some good news if you’re one of those people like me who can’t pull a total Martha Stewart-worthy home out of your back pocket five days or so after delivering a baby: there’s a another option if you want the look of lifestyle photography without the stress of trying to make your home ready for it. At our studio, we have a beautiful room set up with a comfortable bed and gorgeous light. It’s not your bedroom, true, but will you really miss seeing those piles of laundry (you know you’ve got some!) in the background of all your newborn photos? We can create those soft, intimate moments in our studio that you want captured, and you won’t have to lift a finger to clean or tidy a thing. You won’t look too posed, but you will look gorgeous. Kind of the best of all worlds, right?
If you are expecting a baby, we’d love to chat with you more about our natural studio newborn sessions. In order to offer you the most relaxed experience in our studio, we offer a very limited number of newborn sessions per month; this means we take our time with you and that you’ll never feel rushed, but also that we book up in advance so don’t wait too long to drop us a line.
