Ever heard the expression “cleaning your house while your kids are still growing is like shoveling the walk before it stops snowing?” There are just some things that are not easy or often rewarding with young children. In my experience as a young mother (before I became a photographer), house cleaning was one of them and a photo session with toddlers was another. But, oh how I tried: we went to ALL of the big box portrait studios, always with the hope that this time, the photo session would produce the desired result. Eventually, I declared the whole venture ‘mission impossible’ (especially after baby number three came along) and went seven years without having family photos taken. So believe me when I tell you: I know the thought of bringing your newborn baby and older children in for a photo session when you are still sore from delivery and no doubt sleep deprived sounds slightly un-fun. Understatement, I know. That said, newborn family sessions capturing your brand new little one and his/her older siblings CAN be enjoyable, and are definitely the photo sessions you will most regret skipping.
We recently captured a young family welcoming a baby girl. At our pre-session consult, Dad warned us: our son doesn’t ever smile in photos. Dad warned us: he’s active, he’s a two year old, oh, and the baby is an unknown since we haven’t met her yet.
But most children do smile in photo sessions, if you engage them, if you get to know them, if you find their happy place (jumping on a bed, playing peek a boo with blankets in this case). And most two-year-olds can and will participate beautifully in photo sessions, if you know how to work with them. We have tricks up our sleeve for just about every situation. When you come in for a consult, remind us to tell you the trick we used here to get reluctant big brother to kiss his baby sister’s cheek - it’s a good one, if we do say so ourselves!
During this session, baby’s parents relaxed on a couch in one of our comfortable lounging areas while we worked with both children to capture this sweet moment; the very beginning of their sibling relationship. Mom and Dad actually had a moment to themselves - a stress-free, quiet moment to talk. There was no yelling or crying or tears (on the part of the children or the adults!), maybe there was a bit of bribery, but our little clients tend to be fans of bribery anyway.
Yes, a photo session with a newborn and a toddler is challenging, but it need not be painful. It takes time and effort (don’t all things worth having?). But the workload rests on our shoulders, not yours. When you come in, we will skillfully pose your family, befriend your children and perfectly capture everything you don’t want to forget. You owe it to your family to set up a session to document this fleeting point in time. Babies only come along every once in a while, and they sure seem to grow up quickly. We would love to help you remember this time in all it’s beauty and chaos.
